Apple Event Recap: iPhone 18 Pro, AirPods 5, Watch Series 12, and the Mind-Blowing iPhone DUO!
Share
The presentation kicked off like an actual movie. Tim Cook even showed up in a super playful mood to introduce Apple’s brand-new CEO: John Ternus.
They dropped the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Let’s dive into everything new they packed into these devices.
📱 iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max: The AI Powerhouses
First off, we are getting the new A20 Pro chip.
As for colors, they introduced:
- Black
- Silver
- Glacier
- Burgundy (fun fact: the speaker’s sweater practically matched this new phone color).
The New Siri AI (Apple Intelligence)
Apple focused heavily on their Apple Intelligence model. The new version of Siri is designed to be way more personal, boost your productivity, and honestly, impress you visually.
The hands-on video showed some seriously useful features. Siri can now search for absolutely anything on your phone. Even better, it will connect with third-party apps to help you get things done—Apple is opening up access for developers to make this happen.
Siri now has its own standalone app icon. You can type or talk to it, and the app keeps a full history of all your past requests. Naturally, everything syncs perfectly across all your devices—classic Apple ecosystem in action.
They specifically highlighted how Siri helps right inside the Camera app. For example, if you snap a photo of an event poster, Siri can automatically create a calendar event so you don't forget to go. Super convenient.
You also get new personalization sliders to customize Siri’s voice, tone, color, and interaction style. Plus, they promise dictation is vastly improved. Is it finally time to say goodbye to the keyboard? We'll see if it actually outperforms what's currently on the market.
More Smart Features & Photo Editing:
- Safari: Can now monitor website changes and notify you automatically.
- Shortcuts: Siri will help you build custom automations tailored exactly to you.
- Photo Moderation & Effects: Siri can now edit photos, apply special effects, blur backgrounds, and effortlessly remove unwanted objects (like a random stray hand in your shot).
- Perspective Shift: You can literally change the camera angle after the photo has already been taken.
My take: It feels like they want us to live in a perfectly engineered world. Personally, I like a bit of imperfection—it’s what makes life real. At launch, Apple Intelligence will support 16 languages, while Siri will support 6. A solid starting point.
Performance, Radiators, and Insane Battery Life
The A20 Pro chip is faster, reaches further, and so on. To handle all that raw power in such a tight space, Apple engineered a platinum radiator to pull heat away from the chip. The result? A 50% increase in efficiency.
They also boosted battery life. In classic Apple fashion, "it's the best battery life ever" and "you’ve never held a phone with a battery like this". Efficiency is so high that the base iPhone 18 Pro now gets the exact same battery life as last year's iPhone 17 Pro Max! They promise 36 hours of continuous video streaming over eSIM, and a whopping 45 hours on the Pro Max.
Charging speed got a massive upgrade, too. The presenters claim you can juice up from 0% to 50% in just 15 minutes. Now that is awesome.
Next Up: The Camera 📸
Apple cameras are always incredible, and this one is no exception. The big news here is the variable aperture.
We get a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with a variable physical aperture. The mechanical aperture blades look like something straight out of a spaceship, and Apple made sure to show off a stunning close-up video of them working. The aperture adjusts automatically based on your environment.
New hardware means brand-new software. They are promising cinematic effects, the ability to add music directly to videos, and a new Pro Control feature. Pro Control gives you manual mastery over white balance, exposure levels, and manual aperture adjustments for both photo and video.
Other notable camera features:
- Smart Focus Tracking: Lock onto a subject while filming video, and the camera will strictly follow them. Perfect for filming a loved one without losing focus.
- Photographic Styles: Tweak textures and balances, and change them up at any moment.
- Apple Reference Image: To combat AI deepfakes, this feature helps prove the authenticity of a real photo versus an AI-generated one. To do this, the phone constantly saves a "digital negative" of the shot, even if you heavily edit it. Oh boy, imagine how much storage space that's going to eat up...Still, it captures every tiny detail.
Design and OS
Apple managed to shrink the Dynamic Island, and it can now display 3 active tasks simultaneously. The whole experience runs on iOS 27 (which we previously covered during our WWDC 26 coverage).
🎧 AirPods 5: Big Sound, New Tech
Apple says the AirPods 5 have been completely rebuilt from the inside out with a redesigned acoustic architecture for even better audio quality.
For the first time on the standard model, Apple added Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), blocking out 50% more ambient noise. However, running ANC drops battery life to 5 hours on a single charge (20 hours total with the case). They also included Transparency Mode for when you actually want to hear the world around you.
Here is the scary part: The earbuds use AI to automatically decide which mode you need based on surrounding noise. There is a manual override, but honestly, automatic switching gives me trust issues.
Thanks to the ecosystem, you can trigger Siri AI hands-free through the buds. Siri will find, analyze, and read out information contextually. Want to feel like Iron Man? Go ahead and rename your Siri to "Jarvis".
There is also a brand-new Live Translation feature. But let's be real—you still need to learn the language if you want to avoid the "dog effect" (where you understand everything but can't say a word back). The headphones translate what the other person is saying, but you still have to formulate a reply. In the presentation demo, they literally just suggested saying "Thank you".
Apple redesigned the build to be tougher against everyday hazards like dust, rain, and sweat. Best of all, the base price stays exactly the same, meaning pure profit in terms of value.
The Step-Up Model: There is a second, slightly higher-end version of the AirPods 5. It lets you adjust volume directly by sliding your finger up and down the stem (just like the AirPods Pro). It also adds a wireless charging case. Speaking from personal experience, wireless case charging is incredibly convenient. This fully loaded model adds a $20 premium, bringing the price to $149.
⌚ Apple Watch Series 12 & Ultra 4
Apple Intelligence is stitched into the fabric of this entire keynote, and the new watches are no exception. Apple unveiled the Watch Series 12 and the Watch Ultra 4.
Both models feature a completely overhauled Healthing System built on three pillars:
- Expanded electrode contact surface area.
- Re-engineered Photodiode optical sensors arranged in a ring layout for maximum efficiency.
- Larger, highly efficient green LEDs for ultra-precise, continuous heart rate tracking throughout the day.
Because of these upgrades, the watch samples your vitals much more frequently, drastically increasing data accuracy. Apple clearly wants these to transcend basic fitness trackers; by evaluating your physical state, the watch will literally tell you when to "hit the gas" or when to rest. And with Apple Intelligenceacting as your digital coach, it will actively give you recommendations based on your personal data. Of course, you can still log everything manually.
They also built a new microphone array into the watches, introducing Audio Intelligence. The watch can now recognize specific sounds like a doorbell, a crying baby, or emergency sirens, and push a notification to your wrist. Furthermore, this mic is constantly recording in the background. For example, if you want to remember what the waiter recommended at dinner, you can just pull up a text transcript of the audio. It's a fascinating look into our new digital reality, though Apple heavily emphasized that the feature is completely secure and private.
To power these AI capabilities, the watches are equipped with the new, beefier S11 processor. On the eco-side, the watches are made from 100% recycled aluminum. They also introduced a brand-new Ceramic material option—it looks incredibly inspiring, and I can't wait to feel it in person.
🤯 The Wild Card: Apple iPhone DUO
Crafted from premium titanium, featuring a dual-camera setup, and sporting two distinct displays. It has one small external screen, but it unfolds into a massive primary display that looks very close in size to an iPad mini.
All physical and on-screen active buttons are strategically placed on the right side of the device. This ensures that when you're holding it one-handed, you can reach everything effortlessly without stretching your thumb.
If you don't unfold the screen all the way and instead prop it open at a 90-degree angle, it transforms into a mini laptop, complete with a virtual keyboard on the bottom and a display on top. (I just hope the bottom half doesn't have protruding camera bumps so it doesn't wobble on a table). If you prop it open vertically, it acts like a digital photo frame—a really clever concept. Though, I am curious how they solved usability comfort for left-handed vs. right-handed users.
When fully unfolded, the main screen is 50% larger than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is an absolute unit and officially takes the crown for the largest screen in the Apple family. The smaller secondary cover screen takes up about 90% of the surface area of a standard iPhone 18 Pro—so it's almost a full-sized display on its own. Plus, it fully supports Apple Pencil.
Apple integrated Touch ID right into the power button on the side of the frame. Unlocking the phone with your thumb as you grab it is incredibly satisfying and convenient.
The phone will drop in two stunning colors: Night Sky and Starlight.
The cameras are pretty standard—just two lenses compared to the triple-cam setups on the Pro models. However, this unique foldable form factor unlocks entirely new ways to interact. For instance, during a video call, your contact can see both you and what you're looking at simultaneously, even allowing for three-way video interactions. When taking a photo of someone, the subject can see a live preview of themselves on the outer screen. Or, you can loop a cartoon on the outer screen to keep a toddler looking directly at the camera while you snap a photo. It is definitely a brand-new photo and video experience.
Ouch factor: Pricing starts at a whopping $1,999.
Funny observation: Throughout the entire keynote commercials, they didn’t show a single person actually taking a regular phone call on it—whether folded or unfolded! I guess we'll have to find out how that feels down the road.
